D is for Dystopian Fiction

Dystopian futures have often been depicted in science fiction.  George Orwell’s 1984, Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World, and the more recent Hunger Games trilogy from Suzanne Collins are just a few well-known examples of a dystopian fiction.  Dystopian novels and films have long been a popular part of sci-fi.  As humans, we know that darkness looms within us, and human-built societal structures can either bring out the best or the worst in us.  Anything we as humans build, after all, are reflections of ourselves.  Those flawed systems benefit a select few at the expense of others.  Personal liberties are curtailed in a myriad of ways, whether it be through a restriction of speech, of personal belief, of political power, of personal relationships, etc.  In a dystopian society, poverty is often a fact of life, as those in power keep a majority of wealth for themselves.

Though I could perform an in-depth analysis of each kind of dystopian society portrayed in fiction, I would instead like to contemplate why people enjoy reading about them or seeing them depicted in film.  Often times we indulge in fantasy to escape the real world, but dystopian fiction is hardly the type of fiction that promotes escapism.  Perhaps reading about such a stark existence may help you to appreciate the things you have, but there’s something more to our love of these bleak scenarios.

Maybe we are intrigued by fictional dystopian societies because our world has its own history of them, and that kind of darkness that exists in our past intrigues us.  Perhaps we simply like the see the hero or heroine of the story stand up against incredible odds and triumph.  Who doesn’t like to see an underdog succeed, or at the very least, put up a brave fight until the bitter end?  Perhaps it gives us hope to see that, no matter how bad things get, the better nature of humanity still shines bright.

Which elements of various dystopian futures do you see in today’s society?  Why do you think dystopian stories captivate readers?  What would you count as a dystopian society, taking into account that said society is creating a comfortable existence for some?

Finding Vivian Maier Documentary Trailer

You never know what kind of creative genius the person standing next to you might secretly be.  And you certainly never know what kind of treasure you might discover in an auction.

Interstellar-Teaser Trailer

This teaser shows very little of the actual film, but it gets me excited anyway.  I love space, and I'm a proponent of space exploration, so that probably has a lot to do with it.

The description for this film (quoted from IMDB) reads: "A group of explorers make use of a newly discovered wormhole to surpass the limitations on human space travel and conquer the vast distances involved in an interstellar voyage."

I know I'll have to see this one.

How It Should Have Ended

My husband and I recently discovered this site that has videos about how popular movies should have ended.  Plenty of my favorite movies are represented there, while movies I couldn't stand are also mocked.  I like the mixture of good and bad and the way they have fun with them.

This video presents an alternative ending for Aliens.  This is a film I love, by the way.  Enjoy!

Jurassic Park Honest Trailer

I love Jurassic Park.  When I saw this movie in the theaters as a kid, it launched my love of dinosaurs into the stratosphere.  I also admit that I wish I could have seen it in 3D.  I guess I still technically could, but the odds of this happening are slim due to real life factors.  I just can't get to the movie theater as often as I used to.

Still, even with my love of this film, I thought this trailer was pretty funny when I first saw it, so I thought I'd share it.  Enjoy!

A Disastrous Forecast

This video has been all over the place, so I'm sure many of you have already seen it.  The Geek Twins already featured this.  I highly suggest checking out their site if you haven't already.

Oh well.  I'm putting it here for my own personal amusement.  And if any of you enjoy it as well, that's a nice bonus!

ROBOTS!

Thank you George Takei for sharing this on Facebook.  Wall-E is the new Waldo.  It is now my desktop background and brings me much happiness.

How many ways are there to classify these?  Well, too many to count, probably.  Here are some ways that have come to mind, but this is by no means an inclusive list.

  • cartoon vs. live action robots
  • movie vs. T.V. robots
  • by era (decades shown or time period of show featuring them)
  • genre (sounds obvious, but Tom Servo from MST3K is comedy; Bender from Futurama, a comedy; Kryten from Red Dwarf, which is sci fi and comedy)
  • by size, shape, or color
  • by function
  • humanoid vs. non-humanoid robots
Can any of you think of additional ways to classify them?  Or maybe point out one of your favorite robots.

Flying People Over NYC

These days you need to be creative about marketing to really get the desired attention.  In an effort to promote the new movie Chronicle that comes out later this week, Thinkmodo designed three cleverly designed radio-controlled airplanes.  From the ground they looked eerily like real people.  Obviously it had to be quite the sight to actually warrant the attention of New Yorkers who, let's face it, are pretty used to almost anything happening around them.

Thinkmodo is a company that specializes in creating viral videos for promotional purposes.  Clearly they succeeded in getting attention.  Only time will tell how well that success translates to the box office.
