I'm obviously an avid Doctor Who fan, and my husband has spent the last few weeks immersed in the world of Minecraft.  So when I saw this, I knew I had to share it.

Z is for the Zoo Hypothesis

Since this is the last day of the challenge, I wanted to have a little fun.  That's why I decided to post about the Zoo Hypothesis.

The Drake Equation is useful for calculating the possible number of intelligent civilizations in our galaxy.  The answer garnered varies depending upon the values used for each variable (we know some values fairly well, while some are more of an educated guess), but it's a fun intellectual exercise even if we don't get any solid answers from it.

I believe there's life elsewhere in the universe.  It's too large and amazing for me to think otherwise. Still, I'm not holding my breath while I wait for a spaceship to come down and take me for a ride, no matter how cool it would be!

There's debate over whether we've ever been visited by extraterrestrial life.  Some contend we have, while the official consensus is that we haven't.  Those who believe in alien life often claim that we haven't been visited due to large cosmic distances, but this isn't the only hypothesis out there.

The Zoo Hypothesis speculates that intelligent alien life hasn't contacted us in order to allow for us to evolve and mature on our own without interference.  If they observe us at all, we're like animals in a zoo (except we don't know we're in a zoo and we can't see those who are watching us).  Maybe it should be renamed the Prime Directive Hypothesis.  That name seems more appropriate to me.

And for a little bit of fun and deep thinking, here's a clip from Star Trek TNG where the crew of the Enterprise debates the scope of the Prime Directive.  Enjoy!

Yay Flexagons!

Star Wars and Escher, A Beautiful Pairing

It's being called "Nerd Nirvana."  This very well may be the case.  M. C. Escher is known all over the world for having created images that defied logic.  The impossible came to life before our eyes.  I grew up with an intense love for his works.

And now my love for Star Wars and Escher have been meshed into one glorious thing.  Click HERE to see it.

ROBOTS!

Thank you George Takei for sharing this on Facebook.  Wall-E is the new Waldo.  It is now my desktop background and brings me much happiness.

How many ways are there to classify these?  Well, too many to count, probably.  Here are some ways that have come to mind, but this is by no means an inclusive list.

• cartoon vs. live action robots
• movie vs. T.V. robots
• by era (decades shown or time period of show featuring them)
• genre (sounds obvious, but Tom Servo from MST3K is comedy; Bender from Futurama, a comedy; Kryten from Red Dwarf, which is sci fi and comedy)
• by size, shape, or color
• by function
• humanoid vs. non-humanoid robots

Can any of you think of additional ways to classify them?  Or maybe point out one of your favorite robots.

Dr. Who Comic Relief

Here's a Dr. Who special, entitled "The Curse of Fatal Death."  This was done to benefit Comic Relief.  Rowan Atkinson plays the Doctor, or at least one of them.  You'll undoubtedly recognize some of the others.

This is worthwhile for any Whovian to watch.  Or, just anyone really.

Nerd Language

When you're dealing with geekdom, you must understand that there's a different language.  When dealing with a  group of people, or in this instance just two, who get into a conversation concerning geek culture, accept the fact that, as an outsider, you won't have a clue what's going on.

Geeks and Nerds

The terms "geek" and "nerd" are often used interchangeably, though there's a definite difference in meaning.  I stumbled across this video on You Tube, and I feel like this really speaks to the issues that my husband and I find ourselves arguing about.  He loves computers and video games, while they confound me.  But hey, before you judge me, at least I like Star Wars!  If I didn't, I don't think my husband would have been able to look past that.  It's his favorite thing in the universe!
