Hi Pluto!
New Horizons is a success! Today's flyby is an amazing accomplishment. It's hard to believe that we finally know what Pluto looks like in great detail. As a kid, I loved looking at images of the solar system, but I was frustrated by the fact that our best images of Pluto were so blurry.
That's not a problem anymore!

Billions of miles traveled. 9 years have passed since New Horizons loaunched, and it took many years of planning to even get to that point. Congratulations to the people who made it possible!

Orion Embarks on First Test Flight
For those of you who haven't yet had a chance to see it, here's the video of Orion launching into space for its first test flight.
I hope NASA keeps going and follows through with their plans to eventually land human beings on Mars.
I know budget concerns can always be problematic, so we'll see.

N is for NASA
NASA was founded in 1958, the year after the Russians put Sputnik, the first artificial satellite, into orbit around the Earth. The space race was on, and the hard work and dedication of those working for NASA took America into space. That's something worth celebrating.

Happy Apocalypse Day!
Well, we're all still here thus far! I already devised my own doomsday scenario for the Choose Your Own Apocalypse Blogfest and posted it on my writing blog. Check it out if you like!
On this blog, I felt I had to acknowledge this important day with some celebratory videos. This first one explains why we're still here. That is, unless The Doctor actually saved us.
This video doesn't address all of the doomsday theories, but it does show real science taking down the mumbo jumbo of pseudoscience!
I also thought this next video was hilarious! It also contains useful tips in case the apocalypse does squeeze its way in by the end of the day. After all, if the world does end, you want to preserve the moment!

Time Lapse View of Planet Earth
I've often wondered what it would be like to fly over the Earth, but as of yet, I've never had a chance to do it. However, when I first saw this video, it amazed me. Our world looks so small and beautiful, and sights like these only make me love outer space even more.

Sci-Fi in Space!
As a science fiction nerd, I can hardly contain my excitement about this. We may soon have the first science fiction film shot in space!
Apparently the footage was shot in 2008 by a visitor to the International Space Station (ISS), Richard Garriott. Legal issues ensued because the filming wasn't included in the agreement that Garriott had with NASA, thus delaying the release of the film.
Gotta love the bureaucratic obstacles we face in modern society.
Yet there's hope as it seems NASA may soon approve the film. It's called Apogee of Fear. Oooh. The title's giving me chills already!
One thing I'm sure of on this one. Whatever the quality of the film may be, this is awesome!
